Germany bets on quantum sensors: new funding programs launched

The German Federal Agency for Breakthrough Innovations (SPRIND) has officially announced the launch of two new support programs aimed at developing quantum sensor technologies. These are devices that, by leveraging fundamental quantum effects—such as superposition and entanglement—can achieve unprecedented measurement accuracy.

Quantum sensors open up enormous opportunities for a range of industries: from high-precision navigation (including in the absence of GPS signals) to climate monitoring and industrial metrology. Unlike quantum computers, which are still in the scaling stage, sensors are already demonstrating practical value and are ready for commercialization.

The first program is focused on applied use cases—teams must propose a ready-made solution for a specific market niche. The second program, in contrast, is centered on fundamental research: developing new measurement methods and experimental quantum systems. Applications are accepted until September 6.

Participants who pass the selection will receive not only financial support but also access to mentorship from leading experts and industry contacts, which is critical for bringing technology from the lab to the market.

Cryptalist Analysis: The SPRIND initiative is not just another grant. It is a signal that Germany is consciously shifting its focus from theoretical quantum computing toward practical, applied technologies. Quantum sensors are perhaps the most underestimated segment of the quantum industry, capable of delivering economic impact faster than a full-fledged quantum computer. For startups working at the intersection of physics and engineering, this is a window of opportunity not to be missed.
