Germany is betting on quantum sensors: two innovative programs launched

The German Federal Agency for Breakthrough Innovations (SPRIND) has officially launched two new support programs focused on the development and implementation of quantum sensors. These are high-precision devices that leverage fundamental quantum effects for measurements with unprecedented accuracy. Such sensors have the potential to revolutionize navigation, climate monitoring, industrial automation, and even medical diagnostics.
Timelines and Funding Directions
Applications are accepted until September 6. The first program focuses on applied scenarios—ready-made solutions that can be integrated into existing technological chains. The second program targets fundamental research: new measurement methods and the creation of fundamentally different quantum systems. Participants will receive not only direct funding but also access to mentorship support and a broad network of industry contacts.
Analysis and Prospects
Quantum sensors are not just scientific exotica. Unlike quantum computers, which are still in the scaling stage, sensors are already demonstrating commercial potential. Germany, traditionally strong in high-precision engineering, is making a strategically sound move by investing in this niche. In my assessment, quantum sensors will become the first mass-market product of the quantum era, and Berlin is striving to take a leading position in this segment, outpacing competitors from the US and China.
