Germany bets on quantum sensors: SPRIND launches two funding programs

The German Agency for Breakthrough Innovations SPRIND has officially launched two new support programs aimed at developing quantum sensors. These are devices that use fundamental quantum effects—such as superposition and entanglement—to achieve unprecedented measurement accuracy. These are not just laboratory toys: quantum sensors have the potential to radically transform navigation systems, climate monitoring, geological exploration, and industrial quality control.

Applications are accepted until September 6. The first program focuses on applied scenarios—that is, projects that can be quickly implemented in the real sector. The second is aimed at fundamental research: new measurement methods and quantum system architectures. Teams that pass the selection will receive not only direct funding but also access to mentorship and a broad network of industry contacts, which is critical for commercializing such complex technologies.

From my perspective, this move by Germany is a logical continuation of a global trend. After the quantum computing boom, investors and governments are beginning to realize that quantum sensors could become the first mass-market commercial product in this field. They are cheaper, easier to manufacture, and already capable of solving specific tasks that affect the safety and efficiency of entire industries. If SPRIND manages to bring even a couple of startups to the stage of industrial prototypes, it will give Germany a tremendous technological advantage for decades to come.
