Germany launches state funding for quantum sensors: betting on ultra-precise measurements

The German Federal Agency for Breakthrough Innovation (SPRIND) has announced the launch of two new support programs focused on the development of quantum sensors. These are technologies that utilize fundamental quantum effects — superposition and entanglement — to achieve a fundamentally new level of measurement precision.

Quantum sensors have the potential to radically transform a range of industries: from navigation systems resistant to GPS signal jamming, to climate monitoring and industrial quality control. Unlike classical sensors, they detect the slightest changes in magnetic fields, gravity, and time.

The first SPRIND program targets applied scenarios: selecting projects ready for implementation in the real sector. The second supports fundamental research aimed at creating new measurement methods and quantum system architectures. Applications are accepted until September 6, 2025.

Participation conditions and scope of support

Winning teams will receive not only direct funding but also access to the agency's mentor network, as well as industry contacts with potential customers and industrial partners. This approach is a hallmark of SPRIND: the agency does not just allocate grants but accompanies startups at all stages from idea to commercialization.

My perspective on the situation

Germany is consistently increasing its investments in quantum technologies, and this step is a logical continuation of that strategy. However, it is worth noting that quantum sensors are one of the few areas where Europe can truly surpass China and the US, without getting bogged down in the race for qubits. For the crypto industry, this is a signal: increased precision in measuring time and gravity could indirectly affect blockchain network synchronization and the development of post-quantum cryptography. For now, this is just a hypothesis, but laying the groundwork should start now.
