Germany is betting on quantum sensors: two funding programs have been launched

The German Federal Agency for Breakthrough Innovations (SPRIND) has announced the launch of two specialized support programs focused on projects in the field of quantum sensors. These are devices that exploit fundamental quantum effects to achieve a fundamentally new level of measurement precision.
Quantum sensors are not just laboratory toys. They have the potential to revolutionize navigation systems, where resistance to interference is critical; climate monitoring for ultra-precise analysis of atmospheric composition; and industry, from quality control of materials to detecting minute defects in infrastructure.
The application campaign will run until September 6. The structure of the programs reflects two key vectors of technology development: the first program focuses on applied scenarios and the commercialization of existing developments, while the second targets fundamental research aimed at creating new measurement methods and improving the quantum systems themselves.
Winning teams will receive more than just financial grants. SPRIND offers a full-fledged support ecosystem: individual mentoring from leading industry experts, as well as direct access to a broad network of industrial partners and potential customers. This is critically important, as the gap between a laboratory prototype and a market-ready product is often the main barrier for deep-tech startups.
Analytical commentary: The SPRIND initiative is a timely and strategically sound move. While all attention is focused on quantum computers, it is quantum sensors that could become the first "killer" technology to deliver real economic benefits within the next 3-5 years. Germany, traditionally strong in industrial metrology, has every chance to dominate this niche if it can effectively convert scientific advances into commercial products. The quantum sensor market, in my estimation, will grow an order of magnitude faster than the quantum computing market, and this competition is an excellent opportunity for talented teams to enter it at an early stage.
