Alphabet enters the Dow Jones but loses $250 billion in market capitalization: the price of prestige
Starting June 29, 2026, Alphabet (GOOGL) will officially replace Verizon Communications in the Dow Jones Industrial Average. However, this landmark milestone coincides with the most severe talent crisis at Google DeepMind, which has already cost the company a quarter of a trillion dollars in market value.
On June 23, S&P Dow Jones Indices announced the rotation: Verizon, whose weight in the index was a mere 0.5%, is making way for Alphabet. Google's higher stock price will give it significantly more weight in this prestigious benchmark, which has historically focused on "blue chip" companies of the U.S. economy.
Two resignations — minus $250 billion
However, the news of inclusion in the Dow Jones did not save Alphabet's shares from a collapse. The stock plummeted by 6% — the sharpest drop since February and the worst trading session in nearly a year. In a single day, the company's market capitalization shrank by almost $250 billion.
The cause of the panic was two high-profile resignations. John Jumper, the 2024 Nobel laureate in chemistry for AlphaFold, left Google DeepMind after nearly nine years and moved to Anthropic. And a few days earlier, on June 18, Noam Shazeer — co-author of the famous 2017 paper "Attention Is All You Need" and one of the leaders of the Gemini project — announced his move to OpenAI. Less than two years ago, Google paid about $2.7 billion to bring Shazeer back from Character.AI.
Significance of the Dow Jones reshuffle
S&P Dow Jones Indices explained that the index composition update is primarily driven by Alphabet's strong positions in technology, digital advertising, cloud services, and artificial intelligence. After Verizon's exit, the Dow Jones lost its last company from the telecommunications sector and became even more closely tied to the AI-driven economy. Earlier, in 2024, Amazon joined the index, while Apple and Microsoft were already in it — now Alphabet has been added to them.
Expert comment: Inclusion in the Dow Jones is undoubtedly a recognition of Alphabet's scale. But by June 29, Google is approaching with a talent crisis that no place in rankings can solve. The brain drain to competing AI labs signals systemic problems in retaining key talent, and the market has already delivered its verdict. Investors should closely monitor how Alphabet addresses this issue; otherwise, the index's prestige will not compensate for the loss of intellectual capital.
