Arrest of a Chinese businessman in Thailand: arrest warrant for illegal mining and electricity theft

Thailand's Department of Special Investigations has officially authorized the arrest of Chinese citizen Wang Yicheng, suspected of organizing a large-scale illegal cryptocurrency mining network. This involves a serious violation that goes far beyond ordinary mining — the investigation has established that the criminal group illegally connected to power grids, stealing resources worth approximately $28 million.
Money laundering scheme and connection to online crime
According to the investigation, the mining infrastructure not only consumed stolen electricity but also served as a tool for laundering proceeds from scam projects and illegal online gambling. Converting "dirty" funds into cryptocurrency through their own facilities is a classic tactic of criminal groups seeking to complicate the tracking of financial flows.
In November of this year, Wang Yicheng was already officially charged with theft of state resources and violations of computer crime laws. However, according to available information, the suspect has managed to leave Thailand, which led to the issuance of an international arrest warrant.
This case serves as yet another reminder that the energy intensity of mining makes it vulnerable to abuse. Authorities in many countries are tightening controls, and Thailand is no exception. In my assessment, such precedents will drive the implementation of stricter regulatory measures for industrial mining across the Southeast Asian region.
