A Chinese entrepreneur has been placed on a wanted list in Thailand in connection with a case of illegal mining.
Thai law enforcement authorities have officially issued an arrest warrant for Chinese citizen Wang Yicheng, suspected of organizing a large-scale illegal cryptocurrency mining network. Investigative actions have been initiated by the Department of Special Investigation, which is handling the case.
According to the investigation, the criminal group, allegedly led by Wang Yicheng, illegally connected to power grids and stole electricity worth approximately 28 million US dollars. This energy was used to power thousands of mining rigs. In addition to resource theft, the scheme also served as a tool for laundering proceeds from online fraud and illegal gambling.
In November of this year, Wang Yicheng was formally charged with theft and violations of computer crime laws. The investigation believes that the suspect has already left Thai territory. Efforts are underway to determine his exact whereabouts.
Analytical Commentary:
This case is far from isolated in the industry, but the scale of the theft is striking. Thailand, like many Southeast Asian countries, faces the problem of illegal mining farms that cause enormous damage to power systems. This situation highlights the growing need for stricter control over energy consumption in the crypto sector and international cooperation to capture the organizers of such schemes. Given the cross-border nature of the crime, we can expect extradition requests in the near future.
