IBM unveils a revolution: chips with transistors smaller than 1 nm

IBM Corporation has made a breakthrough in the semiconductor industry by announcing a chip manufacturing technology with a transistor architecture of 0.7 nanometers, equivalent to 7 angstroms. This involves the so-called "nanosheet" architecture, where transistors are not arranged in a single plane but vertically, forming multilayer structures.

According to my analysis of the presented data, this approach fundamentally changes the concept of component density. IBM claims that nearly 100 billion transistors can be placed on a single chip the size of a fingernail. For comparison, modern 2-nanometer technologies, which IBM itself introduced in 2021, were already considered the pinnacle of engineering, but the new method promises a performance increase of up to 50% or an energy efficiency improvement of up to 70%.

The timeline deserves special attention: commercial production of chips using 0.7 nm technology could begin within the next five years. This means we are on the threshold of an era where the computing power of devices will grow exponentially, while energy consumption, on the contrary, will drop to record lows.

As an expert, I emphasize: the transition to nanosheet architecture is not just an evolutionary step but a paradigm shift. Traditional methods of scaling planar transistors are already approaching physical limits, and IBM offers a fundamentally different solution. However, it is worth considering that the mass adoption of such technologies will require not only new lithographic processes but also the adaptation of the entire supply chain—from materials to testing. Nevertheless, if IBM delivers on its promises, the semiconductor market will face a tectonic shift that will affect everything from smartphones to supercomputers.
