Polish exchange Kanga becomes the first in the region to obtain a MiCA license — what this means for the market

принятию регулирования MiCA

The Polish cryptocurrency exchange Kanga has taken an important step in its integration into the European legal framework. On June 18, the Bank of Latvia officially approved the issuance of a license under the MiCA standard to the operator SIA AlphaRoute, operating under the brand Kanga Exchange EU. This event marks not only a local success for the platform itself but also a signal for the entire Central and Eastern European market.

What does the MiCA license provide?

The obtained document grants the company the right to a full range of regulated services within the European Union. Specifically, Kanga can now:

  • Store client crypto assets (custodial services);
  • Manage a trading platform for exchanging digital assets;
  • Facilitate the exchange of cryptocurrencies for fiat money and vice versa;
  • Provide services for transferring crypto assets.

This makes Kanga one of the first fully licensed exchanges in the region, sharply boosting its competitiveness compared to unregulated players.

Why is this important?

With the introduction of the MiCA regulation, the European cryptocurrency market enters an era of transparency and legal certainty. For users, this means enhanced protection of funds and reduced risks associated with bankruptcies or fraud. For the exchange, it means access to institutional investors who previously avoided platforms without a license.

It is worth noting that the choice of Latvia as the jurisdiction for obtaining the license is no coincidence. The Baltic states are actively promoting innovative financial technologies, and the Bank of Latvia has demonstrated a readiness to promptly review applications under MiCA.

My analysis: This move by Kanga is not just a formality but a strategic maneuver. Obtaining a MiCA license opens the door to scaling across the entire EU without needing separate permits in each country. In a situation where many exchanges still operate in a "gray zone," Kanga gains a clear advantage in trust and legitimacy. I expect that in the next 6–12 months, we will see a wave of similar applications from other Eastern European platforms.
