IBM introduces 0.7nm technology: a new frontier in transistor architecture

IBM Corporation has made a breakthrough in the semiconductor industry by announcing a chip manufacturing technology with a 0.7 nm transistor architecture, equivalent to 7 angstroms. The development is based on the concept of "nanostack" — transistors are placed not in a traditional flat structure, but in a multi-layer layout, which fundamentally changes the approach to integration density.

According to analytical data, the new method allows up to 100 billion transistors to be placed on a chip the size of a fingernail. This is comparable to the size of modern processors, but with a qualitatively different density. Compared to the advanced 2nm technology of 2021, the performance of such solutions could increase by 50%, and energy efficiency by 70%. These metrics pave the way for creating ultra-powerful and energy-efficient computing systems for artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and mobile devices.

It is important to note that commercial production will begin no earlier than in five years. This is due to the need to adapt production lines and overcome physical limitations at such atomic scales. IBM positions the technology as a response to the growing demand for computing power while simultaneously reducing energy consumption.
