Japanese financial giant SBI Holdings has officially signed an agreement to acquire the local crypto exchange Bitbank. The deal is valued at 46.7 billion yen, equivalent to approximately $288.6 million. The acquisition will be carried out through its subsidiary SBICAH LLC.

The deal is expected to close in October 2026. This timeline is due to the need for approval from Japan's antitrust regulator, as well as the fulfillment of several other legal and corporate conditions. Upon completion of all procedures, Bitbank will become an indirect wholly-owned subsidiary of SBI Holdings.

This move is not just another market consolidation. According to analysts' estimates, the merger of the existing SBI VC Trade platform with Bitbank will create a massive liquidity pool. The total volume of client crypto assets under management of the new entity will reach 1.1 trillion yen (approximately $6.8 billion), and the total number of registered accounts will exceed 2.92 million.

This acquisition marks a transition of the Japanese crypto market to a new level of institutional maturity. SBI Holdings, which already has a strong banking and insurance background, gains not only access to Bitbank's technological base but also to its loyal customer base. In effect, we are witnessing the creation of a national champion capable of competing with global exchanges while remaining within the strict framework of Japanese regulation.

Expert commentary: From my perspective, this deal is a perfect example of how traditional financial institutions absorb crypto infrastructure without building it from scratch. The price of $288.6 million seems reasonable, given that Bitbank is one of the oldest and most regulated exchanges in Japan. However, the key risk remains the time lag until 2026: over two years, market conditions could change dramatically, and SBI will have to adapt its strategy.
