Thailand has issued a wanted notice for a Chinese entrepreneur for illegal mining and theft of electricity worth $28 million.

Thai law enforcement authorities have issued an arrest warrant for Chinese citizen Wang Yicheng. The businessman is suspected of organizing a large-scale illegal cryptocurrency mining scheme involving the theft of electricity worth approximately $28 million. According to the investigation, the criminal group not only illegally mined digital assets but also used the mining infrastructure to launder proceeds from fraudulent schemes and online gambling.
Details of the Charges and Status of the Suspect
In November of this year, Wang Yicheng was charged under two articles: theft of energy resources and violation of the Computer Crimes Act. Investigators believe the suspect has already left the kingdom, complicating the arrest process. The case is under the jurisdiction of Thailand's Department of Special Investigation, which specializes in particularly serious economic and cybercrimes.
The scale of the electricity theft highlights the growing regulatory challenge of energy-intensive cryptocurrency mining operations in Southeast Asian countries. Thailand, while seeking to attract legitimate investors to the blockchain sector, simultaneously faces the challenge of underground farms that damage the national power grid. This case also demonstrates how illegal mining often intertwines with other types of financial crimes, including money laundering.
Expert opinion: Such incidents will inevitably lead to stricter control over energy consumption by mining companies in the region. Investors and operators of legal data centers should expect increased scrutiny from regulators, which, however, may in the long term help cleanse the market of unscrupulous players.
