IBM presents a breakthrough: chip technology with 0.7nm transistors — a new frontier for the semiconductor industry

IBM has achieved another technological breakthrough by announcing a transistor architecture at the 7-angstrom (0.7-nanometer) level. This innovation, called "nanosheet," fundamentally changes the approach to transistor placement: instead of the traditional flat arrangement, they are stacked in multiple layers.

This vertical approach opens up unprecedented possibilities. By my estimates, the transistor density on a chip the size of a fingernail could reach nearly 100 billion units. This is not just a number—it represents a fundamental shift in semiconductor physics.

Compared to the 2nm process from 2021, the results are impressive: performance increases by 50%, and energy efficiency improves by as much as 70%. For the market, this means future chips will be able to run faster and consume significantly less power, which is critical for mobile devices, servers, and artificial intelligence systems.

However, commercializing the technology will take time. Mass production is expected to begin within five years. This is a standard cycle for such complex innovations, but it confirms that Moore's Law continues to hold, albeit in a new form.

My professional opinion: The transition to a multi-layer architecture is an evolutionary step that could extend the life of silicon technology for another decade. However, the key challenge remains the same: the economic feasibility of mass-producing such chips. If IBM can solve this problem, we will witness a new era in computing power.
