Thailand has issued a wanted notice for a Chinese businessman for organizing an illegal mining farm.

Thai law enforcement authorities have issued an arrest warrant for Chinese entrepreneur Wang Yicheng, who is suspected of organizing a large-scale illegal cryptocurrency mining network. The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) of the Kingdom of Thailand has completed its investigation into this high-profile case, and the suspect has now been officially placed on an international wanted list.
The investigation established that the criminal group led by Wang Yicheng had been illegally connecting to power grids for an extended period to operate mining equipment. According to preliminary estimates, the damage from electricity theft exceeds $28 million. This is one of the largest cases of electricity theft in Thailand's history related to the cryptocurrency industry.
In addition to electricity theft, law enforcement uncovered a scheme to launder proceeds from online fraud and illegal gambling. In November 2023, Wang Yicheng was charged with theft and violations of the Computer Crimes Act. According to Thai police, the suspect has already left the country, significantly complicating the process of his apprehension.
This case highlights the growing problem of regulating mining activities in Southeast Asia. Thai authorities intend to tighten control over the energy consumption of large mining farms and require operators to maintain full transparency in reporting. As an analyst, I note that such incidents create a negative backdrop for the entire legal crypto industry in the region, forcing honest players to undergo stricter verification and licensing procedures.
