IBM unveils 0.7nm transistor chip technology: a breakthrough in nanotech

IBM has announced a new semiconductor manufacturing technology that enables the creation of chips with a transistor architecture of just 0.7 nanometers, or 7 angstroms. This step marks another stage in the miniaturization of computing devices, where traditional planar transistors are giving way to an innovative structure known as nanosheet.

The technology is based on the multi-layer placement of transistors — not in a single plane, but across several layers, which radically increases packing density. According to IBM specialists, this approach allows for placing nearly 100 billion transistors on a chip the size of a human fingernail. This paves the way for creating processors with unprecedented computing power and energy efficiency.

Comparing it to the previous generation — the 2nm process from 2021 — IBM claims a potential performance increase of up to 50% or a reduction in power consumption by 70%. Such metrics place the new technology alongside key milestones in the evolution of the semiconductor industry. However, commercial implementation is not expected for at least five years — the standard timeframe for transitioning from a laboratory prototype to mass production.

As an analyst, I see this announcement not just as a technical achievement, but as a strategic signal. IBM continues to play the role of a "beacon" for the industry, setting the direction that TSMC, Samsung, and Intel will explore in the coming years. But it is worth remembering: the path from 7 angstroms to a real product involves not only engineering challenges but also enormous capital expenditures on lithography equipment and quality control. In the context of the global race for nanometers, such breakthroughs are important, but their practical value will only become apparent by the middle of the decade.
