IBM introduces chip technology with transistors under 1 nanometer — a breakthrough in nanotech.

IBM Corporation has taken a significant step in the evolution of semiconductor technology by announcing a transistor architecture with a size of 0.7 nm, equivalent to 7 angstroms. This innovative approach, called "nanosheet," involves stacking transistors in multiple layers rather than the traditional planar arrangement.

According to data presented by IBM, this architecture allows for placing nearly 100 billion transistors on a single chip the size of a human fingernail. Compared to the 2nm technology introduced by the company in 2021, the new method promises a performance increase of up to 50% or an improvement in energy efficiency by as much as 70%. This fundamentally changes the perception of the capabilities of modern processors and their application in high-performance computing.

Commercial production of chips based on 0.7nm technology, according to IBM's forecasts, could begin within five years. However, it is worth noting that transitioning to such small process nodes involves serious engineering challenges, including managing heat dissipation and quantum effects.

My expert opinion: This announcement is not just a technical novelty but a signal that the race for miniaturization in the semiconductor industry continues, despite physical limitations.
