Thai law enforcement authorities have issued an arrest warrant for Chinese citizen Wang Yicheng, suspected of organizing an illegal cryptocurrency mining network. The country's Department of Special Investigations has initiated a criminal case related to large-scale electricity theft and money laundering.

According to the investigation, the criminal group, believed to be led by Wang Yicheng, illegally connected to power grids and extracted electricity worth approximately $28 million. These funds were used to power facilities for mining bitcoin and other digital assets. Moreover, the mining operation served as a cover for laundering proceeds from online fraud and illegal gambling.

In November of this year, Wang Yicheng was officially charged with resource theft and violations of Thailand's computer crimes law. Investigators believe the suspect has already left Thai territory, significantly complicating his arrest.

This incident is not an isolated case. In recent years, Southeast Asia has seen an increase in raids against illegal miners who steal electricity to bypass high electricity tariffs. Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam are actively combating such schemes, which damage state infrastructure and threaten the legal crypto market.

From my perspective, this case is a clear example of how regulators are beginning to view mining not just as a technological process, but as a potential tool for the shadow economy. Until the industry offers transparent mechanisms for monitoring energy consumption, such crackdowns will only intensify, especially in countries with expensive electricity.
