The Pentagon expands the use of AI in military operations: new doctrine allows autonomous systems

The U.S. Department of Defense has approved an updated doctrine that significantly expands the role of artificial intelligence in military operations. The document, signed in April, though unclassified, had not previously been released to the general public. The key innovation is the official recognition of "combat systems in which AI initiates actions under human monitoring."

According to the doctrine, the rapid development of technologies and the speed of modern conflicts may require the U.S. to create "fully autonomous systems." The main objective is to shorten the "sensor-to-shooter" time cycle and increase the pace of operations. AI will now be responsible for processing intelligence data, correlating information from various platforms, and forming a more complete operational picture. Commanders are recommended to more actively use neural networks for analysis, decision-making, and risk management.

The document also contains provisions on "reducing harm to civilian populations," indicating an attempt to address ethical aspects. However, the Pentagon also warns of the flip side: the text mentions "serious moral and legal dilemmas" associated with excessive reliance on algorithms. An appendix emphasizes that automation does not replace human thinking and proactive communication.

A department representative stated that "humans will always be informed of important operational decisions" and that the department's technologies "do not allow for autonomous target selection or strike execution." However, in practice, the line between "monitoring" and "control" is becoming increasingly blurred. On the same day, the Pentagon announced the launch of an "agent network" to transform battle management systems, confirming the trend toward integrating AI into real combat processes.

My analysis: This step is a logical continuation of the trend we have observed in recent years. The 1,775% increase in AI adoption within the Pentagon (as of June data) is not just a number but an indicator of a fundamental shift. Critically, human control remains formally in place, but the speed of decision-making in cyber warfare and next-generation conflicts could render it illusory. The market for dual-use technologies and military AI is poised for explosive growth, and investors should closely monitor this sector.
