OpenAI has introduced GPT-5.6: a powerful breakthrough, but access to it is strictly limited.
OpenAI has officially announced the GPT-5.6 family of models, dividing the new lineup into three clearly segmented tiers: the flagship Sol, the balanced Terra, and the budget-friendly Luna. However, access to the new generation of artificial intelligence is currently limited to a narrow circle of verified partners approved by U.S. government agencies.
The unveiling of GPT-5.6 is one of the most anticipated events in the AI industry in 2026. The company chose a simple and memorable space theme for the model names: Sol (Sun), Terra (Earth), and Luna (Moon). This is not just a metaphor—the "Sun-Earth-Moon" hierarchy directly reflects both performance level and price category, making the new series much more understandable for users compared to previous abbreviations like GPT-4o, mini, or o1.
Three models — three use cases
The flagship model Sol is positioned as a significant leap forward compared to GPT-5.5. According to OpenAI, Sol surpasses its predecessor in contextual analysis, long-term planning, cybersecurity, and executing complex agent-based scenarios. The model has already achieved the best result on the Terminal-Bench 2.1 test, which evaluates command-line and developer tool performance.
The Terra model offers performance comparable to GPT-5.5 but at half the cost, making it an ideal choice for everyday business tasks. Luna is the most economical model, designed for mass data processing with AI at a minimal price.
OpenAI also emphasizes that Sol has received the highest safety guarantees to date. The model's launch was preceded by weeks of manual testing, and performance was verified on over 700,000 GPU-hours in A100 equivalent.
Why is access restricted?
Despite the official announcement, GPT-5.6 is not yet available to the general public. At the request of the U.S. government, OpenAI has opened early access only to a limited circle of partners through Codex and the API. The company states that it advocates for open accessibility of technology, but at this stage, it is collaborating with government agencies due to the advanced capabilities of the new version.
If testing is successful, OpenAI plans to open GPT-5.6 to everyone within a few weeks.
