Lifting the Export Ban on Claude Mythos 5: 100 US Organizations Gain Access, and Fable 5 is Set for Release

The United States authorities have officially lifted export restrictions on Anthropic's Claude Mythos 5 model. This decision opens access to advanced technology for more than 100 American organizations, including major corporations and government agencies.

The authorization was issued by the U.S. Department of Commerce, which noted that current precautionary measures allow trusted partners to access the Mythos 5 model without needing an additional license. Previously, intensive negotiations took place over two weeks between the administration and Anthropic, during which key company employees visited Washington for meetings with government representatives.

History of confrontation and the return of Mythos 5

As a reminder, both models — Mythos and Fable — were temporarily disabled after one of Anthropic's largest investors, Amazon, expressed serious concerns about their safety. Company researchers warned that Fable 5 could be hacked for potentially dangerous purposes. Until then, Mythos was used exclusively within the Glasswing program — a vulnerability research project involving about 150 organizations from more than 15 countries. Within hours, this model had already identified errors in classified systems during government testing.

Fable 5 still pending — new rules are being formed

Unlike Mythos, access to Fable 5 was previously open to all subscribers, and for some time it remained the most powerful public AI tool. However, its release process has stalled, and exact timelines are not yet announced. The situation is gradually turning into a new system of restrictions. On June 2, an executive order was signed that opens a voluntary channel for federal review of advanced AI models. Developers can submit their solutions for cybersecurity checks 30 days before launch.

Notably, OpenAI followed the same path on Friday, restricting access to the most powerful version of GPT-5.6, called Sol, to about 20 partners who received state approval. The weaker versions Terra and Luna became available to the general public.

Initially, such blockages were driven by fears that China would gain access to the technologies. Attention was linked to South Korean operator SK Telecom, which was added to the Glasswing list in early June and then had its access restricted. SK Telecom denied any connection to China.

Many leaders of major cybersecurity companies, including former Facebook security chief Alex Stamos, urged authorities to abandon restrictive measures. An open letter was signed by leaders from Nvidia, Adobe, Zoom, and other companies.

Countries in Europe and other regions note that they have suddenly become heavily dependent on Washington's decisions regarding access to new developments. Whether Fable 5 will receive similar authorizations will become clear in the coming days.

My expert analysis: Lifting the export ban on Mythos 5 is not just a technical decision, but a clear signal to the market that the U.S. intends to control the spread of the most powerful AI models through a "trusted partners" system. Fable 5 will likely receive similar status, but with additional restrictions. For the crypto industry, this means that access to advanced AI tools for blockchain analysis and cybersecurity will be strictly regulated, which may slow down innovation in decentralized projects but increase the overall level of security.
