Turkey has approved a national quantum roadmap: 85 technological priorities and a focus on quantum security

Turkey has officially unveiled its national quantum roadmap, identifying 85 priority technology areas. The document covers three key domains: quantum computing, quantum sensing, and quantum communications. Of the total priorities, 34 are short-term tasks, while 51 are long-term strategic goals.

The roadmap was developed within the framework of the OTAĞ process under the auspices of Turkey's Presidency of Defense Industries. Approximately 305 experts from 123 different organizations were involved in the work, underscoring the scale and seriousness of Ankara's approach to quantum technologies. This broad consortium includes government agencies, the private sector, academia, and defense enterprises.

Focus on Quantum Security and Cryptography

Among the near-term priorities of the roadmap are quantum security, cryptography, quantum sensors, and secure communications. This is a logical step, given that quantum technologies pose both a threat and an opportunity for modern cryptographic systems. Turkey is evidently seeking not only to protect its infrastructure from future quantum attacks but also to take a leading position in the development of post-quantum standards.

Of particular interest is the inclusion of quantum sensing among the short-term goals. This area is often underestimated, yet quantum sensors could provide a revolutionary breakthrough in navigation, medicine, and geological exploration, not to mention military applications.

Analytical commentary: Turkey is betting on quantum independence, and this is a sound strategic move. However, success will depend not only on having a roadmap but also on actual funding and the ability to retain talent. If Ankara can translate this plan into concrete projects, we will see a new serious player on the global quantum stage, which will inevitably impact both the cryptography market and the security of blockchain networks in the region.
