The key feature of the new devices is a built-in AI assistant, marking an unexpected but logical step in the evolution of feature phones. In an era when the market is saturated with touchscreen smartphones, HMD is betting on users who value simplicity, battery life, and a physical keyboard, but do not want to give up modern digital conveniences.

Digital Assistant at the Center of the Keyboard

The button to activate the AI assistant is located right in the center of the keyboard — an ergonomic solution that immediately catches the eye. According to the manufacturer, the devices support a range of modern features, including video calls, which is a significant step forward for feature phones. However, the key question for users is the monetization model. As revealed by insider sources, the assistant subscription will be paid: the first 180 days are offered as a gift, after which payment is required. Notably, this payment can only be made using a third-party device — a smartphone or tablet. This creates a certain barrier to entry that may deter part of the target audience.

From a market strategy perspective, HMD is trying to carve out a niche between classic "dumb phones" and budget Android smartphones.
