AI Education in Russia: Who and How is Training Specialists for the New Era of Technology

The Russian artificial intelligence market is undergoing tectonic shifts, and the key question today is where to find specialists capable of working on the cutting edge. A recent expert discussion on the AI Future Stage shed light on how neural networks are transforming the educational journey from school desks to careers in IT. The conversation went far beyond theory: participants analyzed real-world cases and identified the main pain points of the system.

Key Topics of the Discussion

Experts focused on several critical aspects. First, who exactly should be responsible for training AI talent: classical universities or flexible online platforms? Second, how to structure education in an environment where technologies become obsolete faster than curricula are updated. The role of the teacher was also addressed: where is the line between automation and human mentorship, and how is the quality of education itself changing under the pressure of market demand?

Special emphasis was placed on preparing for uncertainty. The labor market is transforming before our eyes, and participants concluded that classical diplomas are losing weight, giving way to practical skills and the ability to adapt quickly. In the coming years, not just engineers will be in demand, but specialists who understand how to integrate AI into specific business processes.

Who Set the Tone

The moderator was Alena Afanaseva, founder and CEO of BeInCrypto. The panel included key market figures: Dmitry Botov (co-founder of AI Talent Hub, ITMO), Andrey Komissarov (chief AI specialist at the Synergy Corporation and advisor to the Administration of the President of the Russian Federation), Oleg Grinko (director of T-System, leader of the Energynet working group of the NTI), Ilya Kurmyshev (CEO of Yandex Practicum), and Denis Smetnev (co-founder of Skyeng and uForce). Each presented specific cases from market leaders, breaking down the challenges and prospects of AI education in Russia.

My analysis. The current situation resembles an arms race: the demand for AI specialists is growing exponentially, but the education system, by inertia, continues to produce "universal" graduates. Success will belong to those who can combine an academic foundation with real business tasks. So far, only a few projects have managed this, but they will set the trend for the next 3-5 years.
