China's 'People's' AI Threatens US Hegemony: Washington in Search of a Response

The Trump administration is holding closed consultations, attempting to develop a strategy to counter the rapidly growing ecosystem of open-source artificial intelligence models from China. The AI market is undergoing a fundamental shift, and American officials appear to have recognized the full seriousness of the threat.

This is not just about competition, but about a potential turning point in the global technological balance. Chinese open-source models, while practically matching the performance of leading American counterparts, are offered at radically lower prices. This creates powerful price pressure that could undermine the business models and margins of giants like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic.

According to my analysis of Apollo data, China's share of the top 50 most used AI models in the world has grown dramatically over the past year and a half. In January 2025, the list was led by American developments, with China occupying a modest niche. However, by May 2026, the picture had changed beyond recognition: the number of American models in the top tier decreased from approximately 33 to 28, while Chinese models consistently increased their presence. Interestingly, models from France and other countries have virtually disappeared from the ranking, indicating the formation of a "bipolar" AI market.

Dynamics of the distribution of the top 50 AI models: the US share is shrinking, China's is growing.

This trend is causing serious concern in Washington. The current US policy, aimed at containment through export restrictions, has proven poorly suited to combat open models that are distributed in a decentralized manner. The question remains open: will the administration try to solve the problem with another executive order, or will a comprehensive strategy be required, including stimulating its own open-source projects and revising approaches to regulation?

Cryptalist Analysis

The AI market is entering a phase of "price war," and the winner will not be the one with the smartest AI, but the one who can offer the best price-to-performance ratio. Chinese developers, using the open-source paradigm, are effectively democratizing access to advanced technologies, creating an existential threat to the "closed" and expensive US ecosystems. Investors should closely monitor this trend: it could become the main catalyst for a revaluation of the entire AI sector in the coming years.
