Chinese AI dumping pushes the US to the brink of technological panic: Washington seeks a response
The Trump administration has already entered the phase of early consultations to develop a strategy to counter the rapidly accelerating Chinese open artificial intelligence ecosystem. According to my data, this issue is becoming one of the most pressing on the White House agenda.
This is not just about competition, but about a fundamental shift in the global AI market. Chinese open-source models, which are almost on par with leading American counterparts in performance, are offered at prices that break conventional market logic. According to my analysis, it is this price dumping that is the main source of concern for the U.S. tech sector.
Declining dominance: Numbers that alarm Washington
Data from the Apollo analytical report leaves no room for illusions. Over a year and a half, China's share in the list of the 50 most used AI models in the world has grown dramatically. In January 2025, American models held a dominant position—about 33 out of 50 spots. By May 2026, the situation had changed radically: the number of American models in the top 50 dropped to approximately 28, while Chinese representation steadily increased. Notably, models from France and other countries have almost completely disappeared from this list, giving way to Chinese developments.
If the trend continues, we will witness a massive migration of developers and companies to cheaper Chinese alternatives. This will create enormous pressure on the pricing policies and margins of leading American AI corporations. The question is not whether this will happen, but how quickly and painfully this process will unfold.
My expert analysis: The situation resembles the early stages of an arms race, but in the realm of intelligence. China, using a strategy of open source and aggressive pricing, is not just catching up but changing the rules of the game. The U.S. administration will have to make a difficult choice: either impose new restrictions, risking retaliatory measures and accelerating the fragmentation of the global network, or seek internal levers to reduce development costs. In any case, the AI market will never be the same again.
