Wall Street Titans Unite: BlackRock and JPMorgan Lead the Tokenization Revolution in the UK

The British government has taken a decisive step in institutionalizing digital assets, bringing together 54 leading global financial corporations, including BlackRock, Goldman Sachs, HSBC, JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley, and UBS, to form a working group on asset tokenization. This initiative, backed at the state level, marks a transition from fragmented pilot projects to a unified national strategy.

In the initial phase, the consortium will focus on tokenized repo transactions — a logical choice, as this segment provides the maximum increase in efficiency and liquidity. According to my analysis of the report, the work is planned for the coming year, and we will see the first results by spring 2027. The UK Treasury's estimates are impressive: by 2035, tokenized markets could generate up to £33 billion in additional GDP and £14 billion in tax revenue annually for the economy.

Why now?

Currently, tokenized assets account for only 0.01% of investment portfolios, but their value has surged by 300% over the past year. The growth potential is enormous: according to my forecasts, the market for tokenized real-world assets (RWA) could reach $88 trillion by 2035, compared to the current $3 trillion in cryptocurrencies and stablecoins. The report emphasizes: in the race for standards and liquidity, the one who acts faster wins. Delay risks infrastructure and regulatory frameworks being established abroad, undermining London's status as a global financial center.

Infrastructure and roadmap

The group is creating nine specialized areas, four of which will form the core of the work: primary issuance, secondary markets, collateral, and settlement infrastructure. The first practical case will be an end-to-end repo transaction — from initiation to settlement. Special attention is paid to the payment side: without reliable infrastructure, including tokenized deposits and stablecoins, large-scale tokenization is simply impossible.

Coordination will be handled by a separate group, tasked with ensuring system compatibility and conducting cross-border tests. Key milestones: a pilot issuance of DIGIT government debt securities on the blockchain no later than the first quarter of 2027, and the Bank of England's readiness to accept them as collateral.

My expert conclusion: The creation of this group is not just another pilot, but a fundamental shift. When giants like BlackRock and JPMorgan sit at the same table with regulators, it signals to the market: tokenization is no longer an experiment but is becoming mainstream. Investors should closely monitor developments — the first real repo transactions on the blockchain could serve as a catalyst for explosive growth across the entire RWA sector.
