Strategy reserves and institutional flows: JPMorgan sees positive signals for Bitcoin

The bitcoin market is showing mixed dynamics, but JPMorgan analysts have highlighted several encouraging factors that could support an upward trend. The key one is the growth of Strategy's dollar reserve, which increased from $2.55 billion to $3 billion. According to financial reports, these funds are intended for paying dividends on preferred shares and interest on debt, which, according to the bank's estimates, covers obligations for approximately 20 months.

Institutional Interest and Retail Activity

Alongside this, there is a steady inflow of capital into bitcoin futures on the CME and perpetual contracts. These instruments are traditionally associated with institutional participants, indicating their increased interest in the leading cryptocurrency. At the same time, flows into spot bitcoin ETFs remain highly volatile: after an outflow of $425 million on July 13, an inflow of $181 million followed the next day. Over the past week, net outflows from ETFs amounted to $56.6 million, although on July 16, inflows again reached $79.2 million. JPMorgan analysts attribute the positive dynamics in leveraged funds tied to Strategy's shares primarily to retail investor activity, which has persisted for seven consecutive weeks.

Strategy and Risks

Despite the positive signals, the bank's experts have previously criticized Strategy's bitcoin reserve monetization program, which allows the company to sell cryptocurrency to replenish its dollar stockpile. They recommended building a reserve for 24–36 months to reduce the likelihood of a forced sale of bitcoins to service obligations. As of July 12, Strategy held 843,775 BTC, acquired for $63.69 billion at an average price of $75,476. Over the week, the company raised $466.7 million through the sale of MSTR shares but did not conduct any bitcoin transactions.

My analysis: The increase in Strategy's dollar reserve is undoubtedly a positive signal, as it reduces the short-term risks of forced BTC sales. However, the ongoing volatility in ETF flows and criticism of the company's financing model by the largest Wall Street bank indicate that the market is still searching for an equilibrium point. The key indicator for me remains the behavior of institutional investors in futures — if this trend continues, we could see more confident growth.
