TikTok launches testing of AI-generated face search for bloggers: a new tool for protection against deepfakes
The short video platform TikTok has begun testing a new tool called Likeness Detection, designed to identify content created using artificial intelligence that features the faces of platform creators. Currently, the feature is available to a limited group of creators in the United States.
The tool's mechanism is based on searching for AI-generated videos that utilize a specific blogger's appearance. Upon detecting such content, the creator has the option to report the deepfake or fake account. To activate the feature, users must undergo a identity verification process through the Jumio service, which includes a live selfie and scanning an identification document.
It is important to note that the company emphasizes that copies of documents are not stored on servers, and biometric data is used solely to find matches for the purpose of identifying fake content. This step, in my view, demonstrates the platforms' growing awareness of the threats associated with deepfake technology.
From a market perspective, such measures are becoming critically important amid the rapid spread of generative models. TikTok, as one of the largest social platforms, is forced to respond to the risks of reputational and financial losses for its creators. However, the effectiveness of Likeness Detection will depend on the accuracy of the algorithms and their ability to adapt to new content generation methods.
Expert opinion: The introduction of such tools is only the first step in the fight against AI copies.
