Titans of Russian banking are ready for the battle over cryptocurrency settlements: the "Red Ocean"

The cross-border cryptocurrency settlement market in Russia is on the verge of a radical transformation. The country's leading banks, including Alfa-Bank, have fully completed the preparation of technical infrastructure for working with digital assets. This means that as soon as the regulator gives the "green light," an unprecedentedly intense competitive battle for corporate clients will begin.

Infrastructure is ready, competition is inevitable

According to information received from Dmitry Vitman, COO of the Corporate and Investment Banking unit at Alfa-Bank, all major players have completed technical preparations 100%. The market, in his words, will turn into a "red ocean" — an environment where all competitors already have identical capabilities and will fight for the same audience. The first advantage will go to whoever can offer the service faster and more efficiently than the rest.

At Alfa-Bank, this prospect is seen not as a threat, but as an opportunity. Competition is viewed as a key driver of growth and market share capture at a time of tectonic shifts.

Demand generation — the main challenge

However, technical readiness is only half the battle. The main difficulty, according to the expert, lies in building demand from scratch. The situation resembles the launch of the digital financial assets (DFA) market, when the infrastructure existed but clients still did not understand why they needed it.

The first clients of banks will be companies already familiar with cryptocurrencies: miners and importers working with jurisdictions where cryptocurrency is more widely accepted. For the "average" corporate client, a lengthy immersion and education process will be required. Banks will have to explain pricing principles and compare new instruments with familiar ones.

As noted in the banking community, the return on educational efforts will be extremely low in the initial stages. Significant work will be needed to "reach out and explain" to a large number of potential users.

My analysis: The cryptocurrency settlement market for the Russian corporate sector is not just a technological breakthrough, but essentially the creation of a new financial ecosystem. The winner will not be the one who launches the service first, but the one who can most effectively overcome the inertia of traditional business thinking and prove the practical value of decentralized payments under sanctions pressure.
