The Bitcoin market is showing one of the longest phases of waning interest from US retail investors. The Coinbase Premium index, which reflects the difference in Bitcoin's price on Coinbase compared to other exchanges, has been in negative territory for 60 consecutive days. This is an absolute anti-record in the entire history of observations.

The last time the indicator recorded positive values was on May 19. As of July 18, the index stands at -0.05%. The previous record for the duration of being in negative territory was 40 days — from January 16 to February 24. The current streak already exceeds this figure by 50%, signaling a structural weakening of buying pressure on the largest US platform.

It is important to understand: the Coinbase Premium is not just a technical indicator. It serves as a barometer of sentiment among US retail investors. The lower the value, the weaker the interest in the asset from this key group. A 60-day negative reading indicates that US retail traders are not only in no hurry to buy Bitcoin at current levels but are also likely actively taking profits or shifting into alternative assets.

At the time of writing this analysis, Bitcoin is trading at $64,100, up 1.5% over the past day. The leading cryptocurrency has managed to partially recover from Friday's drop, triggered by a collapse in the US stock market, particularly the semiconductor sector. However, this recovery still looks fragile against the backdrop of historically low premiums.

At the same time, institutional investors continue to show cautious optimism. From July 13 to July 17, spot Bitcoin ETFs saw net inflows of $75.5 million, allowing these products to record a second consecutive positive week. However, this inflow has not yet been able to offset the cooling of retail demand.

Expert conclusion. The current situation is a classic example of divergence between the sentiments of retail and institutional participants. A 60-day negative premium on Coinbase is a worrying signal for a short-term bullish scenario. Until the US retail investor returns to active buying, it will be difficult for Bitcoin to consolidate above the $66,000–$68,000 zone. The market needs a new catalyst to break this prolonged phase of apathy.
