The cryptocurrency settlement market in Russia: repeating the path of digital financial assets (DFA)

The formation of the cross-border cryptocurrency settlement market in Russia is following a scenario we have already observed with the launch of digital financial assets (DFAs). It is a long journey from the first contact to an actual deal, low returns at the initial stage, and a huge amount of work in educating clients.

The key complexity of this new market lies not in technological barriers. The main problem is the need to build infrastructure and demand from scratch. Right now, we are seeing a situation identical to the launch of DFAs: the market essentially did not exist, and it had to be formed starting from the very beginning.

Learning cycle: from conversation to deal

In this mode, clients often do not realize why they need a new tool. The path from the first conversation to a specific deal turns out to be extremely lengthy. Potential users do not see immediate benefits and do not understand how the new service fits into their current business processes. This requires enormous efforts from us, as market participants, to explain and demonstrate value.

"When we launched DFAs from scratch, clients did not understand at all why it was needed. You have to go through a very long path to get from the start of a conversation to a specific deal," describes one of the leading players in the corporate and investment business.

Entry cost and low returns at the start

The second important lesson we learned from the DFA story is the entry cost for a bank or platform. The early stage requires a huge number of negotiations, marketing activities, and client education, while returns in the initial phases remain minimal. This is an investment in the future that requires patience and resources.

A separate challenge is conveying pricing to the client. Many simply do not understand how to compare the new tool with already available ones and how to objectively assess whether it is expensive or cheap. Transparency and simplicity here are key success factors.

My analysis: The cryptocurrency settlement market in Russia is in the "early majority" phase, but with a heavy legacy of distrust and misunderstanding. Repeating the DFA path is not a death sentence, but rather a roadmap. Players who are willing to invest in long and patient client education, rather than quick hype, will ultimately shape this market. However, the speed of its development will directly depend on the macroeconomic situation and the clarity of the regulatory environment.
