Ethereum shortage looms: stablecoins accumulate, ETH liquidity dries up
The Ethereum market is entering a phase that historically precedes sharp price movements. On-chain data analysis reveals a unique configuration: the supply of ETH on exchanges is rapidly declining, while pools of stablecoins ready for buying are growing at record rates. This is a classic scenario of supply compression amid the accumulation of "dry powder."
A two-sided dynamic is forming that could lead to significant price momentum. On one hand, we are witnessing a massive outflow of Ethereum itself from trading platforms. Over the past two weeks, the net flow of ETH on Binance has been consistently negative — coins are leaving the exchange, moving into cold storage or staking. On the other hand, the inflow of stablecoins to the same Binance has surged by 506% compared to the 90-day average. More than $72 million in stablecoins are arriving on the exchange daily.
Staking Takes More and More
Alongside this, the share of ETH locked in staking has reached a new all-time high of 33.48%. This means an increasing portion of the circulating supply is being removed from free circulation. Liquidity on the spot market is tightening, while purchasing power, represented by stablecoins, is accumulating on exchanges.
Analysts describe this configuration as a structural imbalance. Interestingly, it is forming at a relatively stable price around $1,840. This does not resemble the speculative frenzy of past cycles, when growth was driven by aggressive leverage. Now we see a different picture: funding rates on Binance have dropped by 31% over the week, indicating position preparation more on the spot market than on the futures market.
The accumulation of stablecoins amid the tightening of liquid ETH supply is a sign of patient positioning, not reckless profit-chasing. Historically, such a combination has preceded periods of heightened price sensitivity.
My view on the situation: The scenario where accumulated capital in stablecoins "rushes" into the dwindling supply of ETH is technically extremely bullish. However, realizing this potential requires a sustainable demand catalyst. If it emerges, we could witness a sharp and directional move. For now, the market remains frozen in anticipation, coiling the spring.
