Cardano launches the Van Rossem hard fork: reducing fees and preparing for scaling

On July 18, the Cardano mainnet underwent a significant upgrade — the Van Rossum hard fork took effect. This event marks another step in the blockchain's evolution, aimed at optimizing smart contract operations. The upgrade activated new Plutus pricing models, which substantially reduce the computational cost of executing smart contracts. For developers and users, this means lower transaction fees and more affordable interaction with decentralized applications (dApps), which is critical for mass adoption.

Technical Background and Strategic Direction

Beyond the direct cost reduction, Van Rossum serves as an infrastructural foundation. The upgrade prepares the network for the next major phase — the Dijkstra era hard fork. The key innovation of Dijkstra will be the implementation of the Ouroboros Leios protocol. This mechanism is designed to radically increase Cardano's throughput without compromising consensus security. Essentially, Van Rossum is the necessary "substrate" for future scaling, enabling the network to process significantly more transactions per second while maintaining decentralization.

Analytical Perspective

In my view, this hard fork is not just a technical release but a clear signal to the market: Cardano is purposefully moving toward becoming a high-performance platform for DeFi. Reducing smart contract costs directly stimulates developer activity, and the preparation for Ouroboros Leios demonstrates the team's long-term strategy. If the Dijkstra implementation is successful, Cardano could seriously challenge competitors in the Layer-1 segment. However, investors should monitor actual network activity metrics after the upgrade — theory must be confirmed by practice.
