The largest players in the crypto industry have joined forces for the long-term protection of the Bitcoin network. Strategy, a company known for its massive BTC holdings, has announced the creation of the Bitcoin Security Consortium — a consortium with an ambitious goal: to ensure the security of the first cryptocurrency for decades to come.

The founding members include institutional giants such as Anchorage Digital, ARK Invest, BlackRock, Block, Blockstream, Coinbase, Fidelity Digital Assets, Galaxy, and, of course, Strategy itself. The initiative's total budget for the next three years is $15 million. These funds will be directed toward financing developers and researchers, as well as educating the community about the current state of blockchain security.

Two Key Goals of the Consortium

As stated in the announcement, the consortium does not intend to directly interfere with the Bitcoin protocol or speak on behalf of its developers. Each participant retains full independence in determining funding priorities. However, the first and most pressing task has already been defined — preparation for potential threats from quantum computing.

"As long-term BTC holders, we are interested in ensuring Bitcoin remains secure for future generations. Funding and supporting developers is a natural way to contribute," noted Strategy CEO Phong Le.

Strategy emphasizes that, at present, there are no quantum computers capable of causing mass damage to Bitcoin's cryptography. Nevertheless, the technical community is already working on post-quantum security measures, and the consortium intends to support these efforts, as well as provide investors and the media with a reliable reference point as technology evolves.

Operational Management and First Steps

The coordination of the Bitcoin Security Consortium will be handled by Brink Executive Director Mike Schmidt, who participates in the initiative on a volunteer basis, independently of the member companies. In the coming months, the consortium plans to release educational materials on Bitcoin security and continue funding the relevant developer community.

Notably, just the day before, on July 21, Galaxy announced a nearly identical program with a budget of up to $5 million to protect Bitcoin from quantum threats. This indicates that the industry is beginning to perceive the threat of quantum computing not as hypothetical, but as a very real challenge that needs to be addressed now.

Expert Comment: The creation of such a consortium is a powerful signal to the market. When BlackRock, Fidelity, and Coinbase are all in the same boat, this is not just charity, but a strategic investment in their own infrastructure. $15 million is an amount that could dramatically accelerate the development of post-quantum solutions, but the key here is coordination. If the developer community receives a clear plan and funding from such giants, we could see the first working prototypes of protection against quantum attacks within the next 3-5 years. This would become a crucial stage in the evolution of Bitcoin as a global reserve asset.
