CertiK Analysis: Home Invasions Become the Dominant Type of Wrench Attack in the Crypto Space

In the first half of this year, our team recorded 52 cases of wrench attacks—physical assaults aimed at forcing cryptocurrency owners to transfer their assets under threat of violence. This is a 33% increase compared to the same period last year. The most alarming trend is a sharp rise in home invasions: from one case to 20. The total damage associated with these incidents reached $124.1 million.

Geography and Dynamics of Threats

France led in the number of wrench attacks, accounting for 33 incidents. This indicates that criminals are adapting their methods to local conditions and targeting regions with a high concentration of crypto investors. Home invasions, which were previously rare, now make up nearly 40% of all attacks. This suggests that perpetrators are shifting from street robberies to more planned and aggressive actions aimed at isolating victims in their own homes.

Expert Analysis

From my perspective, the rise in home invasions is a direct consequence of the increasing value of digital assets and the lack of adequate physical security among holders of large sums. Criminals understand that it is easier to gain access to seed phrases and private keys in a controlled environment than to hack complex digital systems. I recommend that anyone holding significant crypto assets reassess their security protocols: use multi-signature wallets, store keys in multiple physically secure locations, and, if possible, avoid publicly disclosing their status online.
