Home invasions have become the main threat: analysis of wrench attacks in the first half of the year

The analysis of the cryptoasset security market for the first half of the year revealed an alarming trend: the number of wrench attacks — physical assaults aimed at forcing the owner to transfer digital funds — reached 52 incidents. This is a 33% increase compared to the same period last year. The most notable change was a sharp rise in home invasions, from one case to twenty.

The total damage associated with these incidents is estimated at $124.1 million. The geographic distribution shows that the largest number of attacks — 33 cases — occurred in France. This indicates that attackers are deliberately targeting regions with a high concentration of the crypto community and insufficient physical protection.

Wrench attacks, unlike cyber threats, require direct contact with the victim and are often linked to information leaks about large cryptocurrency holders. The rise in home invasions underscores that asset security is no longer limited to the digital space — physical protection is becoming a critical factor.

From my perspective, this statistic is a signal for investors to reconsider their precautionary measures. Storing large sums on hot wallets or publicly discussing one's portfolio on social media sharply increases the risk. The market is moving toward a point where privacy and anonymity will become not just an option, but a necessity for survival amid the growing physical threat.
