Physical attacks on crypto investors: CertiK records a record increase in wrench attacks

In the first half of 2024, CertiK specialists recorded 52 cases of so-called wrench attacks — physical assaults aimed at forcing cryptocurrency asset owners to transfer their digital funds. This figure shows an alarming 33% increase compared to the same period last year.

The most notable change was a sharp rise in the number of home invasions. While such incidents were previously rare (only one case), their number has soared to 20 over the past six months. This indicates that attackers are increasingly choosing homes as the location for direct pressure on victims, leveraging the element of surprise and isolation.

The total damage associated with the recorded attacks reached $124.1 million. The geographic distribution of incidents is uneven: the largest number — 33 attacks — occurred in France. This may be linked both to the high concentration of crypto enthusiasts in the region and to the specifics of local logistics for physical crimes.

Expert opinion: The rise in home invasions is an alarming signal for the entire crypto community. If wrench attacks were previously more of an exception, they are now becoming a systemic threat. Investors should reconsider their security protocols: refraining from publicly disclosing large assets, using multi-signature wallets, and physically securing homes are no longer just recommendations but necessities.
