Crusoe and Aalo are building the world's first AI factory powered by nuclear reactors: a new standard for energy.

The high-performance computing market is on the brink of a tectonic shift. Crusoe and Aalo Atomics have announced a strategic partnership aimed at creating the world's first specialized data center for artificial intelligence, fully powered by small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs). This is not just a pilot project—it is an attempt to rethink the very architecture of power supply for the most energy-intensive workloads of our time.
Pilot in Idaho and Ambitious Timelines
The first demonstration data center for the Crusoe Spark cloud service is planned to launch as early as 2027 at the Idaho National Laboratory. The project is positioned as tangible proof that nuclear generation can become a reliable and scalable foundation for AI infrastructure. By the end of 2029, the partners intend to deploy Aalo Pods modular power units with a total capacity of 50 MW across Crusoe's sites.
Aalo Atomics CEO Matt Loshak confirmed that the company has already begun construction of a second reactor next to the 10 MW Aalo-X test module in Idaho. The commercial-scale system being built will directly power the Crusoe Spark infrastructure.
Criticality Status and Regulatory Nuances
Notably, Aalo was among four companies that achieved criticality for their reactor within the deadline under the U.S. Department of Energy's pilot program (DOE Reactor Pilot Program). However, it is important to understand: this status is not equivalent to a commercial license. It is merely an intermediate stage confirming technical viability, but it does not resolve regulatory and safety issues.
In parallel, Crusoe is expanding its Texas campus in Goodnight, planning to build two additional buildings with a combined budget of about $1 billion. According to a filing submitted to the state's Department of Licensing and Regulation, completion of the first building is scheduled for August 1, and the second for March 2027. In total, the facility will include at least six buildings, with the power needs of just the first phase reaching up to 530 MW.
It is worth noting that such megaprojects do not come without criticism. Earlier, Floodlight researchers found that data center developers in Texas used simplified permits to build their own power plants, avoiding public environmental discussions. This raises an important question about the balance between technological progress and transparency.
My analysis: The Crusoe and Aalo initiative is a bold step that could become a catalyst for the entire industry. However, I see two key risks: first, SMR commissioning timelines have historically been delayed, and second, the regulatory environment for nuclear energy remains extremely conservative. If the partners manage to meet their stated deadlines, it will set a precedent that will upend the data center power supply market. But for now, this is more of an ambitious declaration than a guaranteed outcome.
