Memecoin JIMOTHY surged 331% within hours: the Elon Musk effect is at work again
The meme coin market once again demonstrated its extreme volatility. The Solana-based token Jimothy The Raccoon (JIMOTHY) made a dizzying jump of 331% in just a few hours. The reason was a video with a raccoon posted on social network X on August 7, which Elon Musk shared.
Reason for JIMOTHY's explosive growth
The billionaire shared the video on Saturday morning, and it instantly went viral. The author of the clip turned out to be Dogan Ural, a designer and creative ambassador for xAI, a company focused on artificial intelligence development. Notably, Musk did not even directly mention the JIMOTHY token in his post, but the market instantly picked up the signal. Within a short time, the post garnered over 811,000 views, and interest in the meme coin skyrocketed.
At the time of analysis, the asset was trading at $0.0162. Market capitalization surged to $16.2 million within hours, and daily trading volume reached an impressive $25.4 million. Such dynamics are a classic example of how community sentiment and a mention by a public figure can move the market faster than any fundamental factors.
The token itself appeared on the Pump.fun platform in July of this year. Anonymous developers named it after the famous raccoon from Seattle, which had already become an internet legend. In the first days after launch, the asset's price rose approximately 52 times when the animal's story spread across the web. Another notable spike occurred after the raccoon was mentioned by the White House account.
Musk and meme coins: a history of influence
Musk's influence on the meme coin market is hard to overstate. This is far from the first time his posts have triggered sharp price movements. In October of last year, a video featuring Grok spurred FLOKI's rise by about 30%. Similar surges occurred earlier—after a post with the nickname "Dogefather," a username change to Gorklon Rust, and other messages from the entrepreneur. Each time, the hype faded as soon as the audience's attention shifted to something else.
JIMOTHY remains a micro-cap asset whose price is driven not by fundamental value but solely by community sentiment. Whether the growth persists directly depends on trading volumes and the ability to maintain interest online.
My take: Such stories are a vivid reminder that meme coins are a game of emotions and attention, not technology. Chasing such assets after the hype is an extremely risky strategy. Experienced traders know: you need to enter at the early stages of trend formation, not when the news is already on everyone's lips. Otherwise, there is a high probability of becoming liquidity for those who got in earlier.
