Tokenized stocks: a dual analysis, hidden risks, and discrepancies that cannot be ignored
A tokenized stock is not just a digital certificate that mirrors the quote of a real security. It is a complex hybrid instrument that requires a fundamentally different approach to analysis from the investor. The holder of such a token gains market exposure but does not become a shareholder in the full sense: they have neither voting rights nor direct claims against the company. The issuance scheme typically looks like this: the issuer (e.g., Backed) buys shares on the exchange, places them with a regulated custodian, and issues tokens at a 1:1 ratio, while an oracle pulls the price onto the blockchain.
The key rule here is to view the asset in two layers. The first layer is the company itself that issues the underlying asset. Its revenue, earnings per share, margin, debt burden, and cash flow are analyzed using standard stock market methods. The second layer is the "wrapper": who issued the token, where the collateral is held, whether it can be redeemed, how deep the liquidity is, and how the price behaves on weekends. The problem is that no standard methodology exists for assessing the "wrapper," and risks must be weighed manually by studying the documentation of the specific product.
Data discrepancies and "double bookkeeping"
To begin with, analytical aggregators provide conflicting data on the same token. Take TSLAX: CoinGecko estimates a market cap of $57.2 million with 140,000 tokens in circulation, while CoinMarketCap counts 194,948 tokens and a market cap of $62.79 million. At the same time, a total of 528,270 TSLAX have been issued. This means that a large portion of the supply simply does not factor into the calculations of either service. Moreover, tokenized Tesla exists in several variants: CoinGecko lists four issuers, and the daily turnover across all versions is about $12 million. Compare this with the average daily trading volume of Tesla stock itself on the exchange—$13.72 billion. The difference is a thousandfold. Any spike in volume on the token is the behavior of a handful of participants, not an influx of institutional money.
P/E: why the numbers differ and how to avoid mistakes
Earnings per share for Tesla are the same for everyone, but the entry price for a token buyer and a shareholder does not always coincide. The on-chain quote follows the underlying asset, but with deviations. Research shows a range from –5.02% to +3.45%. Hence the difference in the multiple. If we calculate P/E with earnings of $1.08, then at a stock price of $321.45, the ratio would be 297.6; at a token price with a 3.45% premium—307.9; and with a 5.02% discount—282.7. Earnings are the same, but the spread ranges from 283 to 308.
Furthermore, services like GuruFocus, Fullratio, and Trading Economics give a P/E range of 185 to 335 for the same security. There are three reasons: which earnings figure is used (basic, diluted, or adjusted for one-off items), the date on which the price is taken, and the period over which earnings are summed. A practical rule: companies can only be compared using figures from a single source. And remember that a high P/E does not always mean overvaluation—it often reflects expectations of future growth.
Sharpe ratio and technical analysis: hidden pitfalls
The Sharpe ratio, designed to measure return per unit of risk, will be systematically understated for a token. The reason lies in the methodology for calculating volatility. For a stock, 252 trading days are used; for a token, 365. Recalculating Tesla's volatility on a 24/7 basis gives 55.8% instead of 46.34%, which lowers the Sharpe ratio by about 17%. Neither the company nor the returns have changed—it is simply that the exchange is closed on weekends, while the blockchain is not.
Technical analysis on a token's chart also works differently. A 200-day moving average based on exchange quotes covers 9.5 calendar months, while the same 200 candles in 24/7 mode cover only 6.6 months. "Weekend" candles are nearly empty due to low liquidity, and gaps on the token's chart are entirely absent, unlike on the exchange chart. Therefore, it is wiser to build indicators using data from the underlying asset and to check the token's price immediately before the trade.
Hidden risks: the SpaceX case
Risks that multiples do not reveal deserve special attention. The episode with SpaceX's offering in June 2026 is a striking example. Crypto platforms opened subscriptions for IPO participation in advance, but on the day of listing, the campaigns were canceled: the token provider received fewer shares than required. Binance Wallet had about $557 million in USDC locked in subscriptions from 27,689 addresses. The reason is not technology but restrictions on the share of the offering allocated to retail. The end buyer learned of the shortfall last, being at the end of a long chain of intermediaries. This vividly demonstrates a risk that no financial multiple accounts for.
My conclusion: tokenized stocks are an instrument that requires dual expertise. Before entering a position, it is necessary to conduct a fundamental analysis of the company using standard methods, and then separately check the "wrapper": the issuer, redemption terms, liquidity depth, and historical deviations of the token's price from the underlying asset. Ignoring any of these layers can lead to paying a premium for an asset that you cannot sell at a fair price when you need to.
