The UK is preparing a regulatory framework for tokenized gold: a new stage in the digitalization of the market

The UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is actively working on approaches to regulating tokenized gold, holding consultations with key market players, including major banks. The regulator is exploring the possibility of creating formalized rules for this instrument, as well as assessing its potential as a collateral asset in wholesale markets.
According to my information, in the coming months the FCA may officially announce the development of regulatory standards. This would be an important step within the broader program of digitalizing the country's wholesale financial markets, aimed at strengthening London's position as a global hub for precious metals trading.
The context here is highly telling: London remains the largest venue for gold trading, but pressure from China, as well as the Shanghai and Hong Kong exchanges, is intensifying. Without modernizing infrastructure, including the adoption of tokenization, the UK risks ceding leadership to more innovative competitors.
Of particular interest is the issue of oversight. The FCA does not regulate physical gold transactions but does control derivatives and exchange-traded products based on it. This creates a unique regulatory crossroads: tokenized gold sits at the intersection of traditional commodity markets and digital assets, requiring a hybrid approach.
It is worth recalling that in June, the regulator already set deadlines for authorizing crypto companies — from September 30, 2026, to February 28, 2027. This points to the systemic nature of the digital transformation of the UK financial sector.
My analysis: Tokenized gold is not just a passing trend, but a logical response to market demand for increased liquidity and transparency. If the FCA manages to create a balanced regulatory environment, London will gain a significant competitive advantage.
