AI assistant in Moscow region medicine: over a million prescriptions checked by neural network

The digital transformation of healthcare in the Moscow region has reached a new level. Over six months of operation, artificial intelligence has taken control of prescriptions, checking over one million medical orders. This is not just an experiment, but a truly working tool that is already integrated into the daily practice of Moscow region doctors.

How the verification system works

The implementation of the assistant began in February 2026. Since then, the neural network has automatically analyzed every prescription, both during in-person appointments and within telemedicine consultations when a prescription needs to be extended or adjusted. The algorithm evaluates prescriptions against 15 key criteria: drug compatibility, patient age and gender, as well as risks of overdose or exceeding recommended treatment durations.

The technology adds an important layer of precision when choosing a treatment plan. However, as emphasized by the regional Ministry of Health, the assistant does not replace a specialist, but merely complements their work. The final decision on therapy always remains with the doctor. The check is triggered at the moment a prescription is issued — the algorithm cross-references patient data with the prescribed medications and signals potential risks before the person receives the drug.

Vice-Governor of the Moscow region Lyudmila Bolataeva notes that the tool helps select the optimal therapy option, working both in an in-person format and during remote consultations. This is especially important amid the growing burden on the healthcare system.

AI in Russian medicine: the trend is gaining momentum

The Moscow region is not the only area where neural networks are being introduced into healthcare. Similar projects are being launched at the federal level and in individual regions. Moscow has tested 200 medical AI services over six years, 67 of which are already operating in hospitals. Over 2,000 clinics from 75 regions have connected to the city platform "MosMedAI," which provides access to radiology diagnostic algorithms based on imaging.

Yandex is also eyeing this market. In late July, the company registered LLC "Yandex Med" to develop medical software. The digital assistant transcribes conversations between doctors and patients, searches for relevant data in the knowledge base, and prepares a brief summary of the medical history.

The use of neural networks extends beyond clinics. With their help, complete genomes of bacteriophages — viruses that infect bacteria — were assembled for the first time. According to the data, 16 of these samples proved viable in the laboratory.

My view: The success of the Moscow region case is a signal for the entire market. When AI takes over the routine verification of prescriptions, doctors gain more time for actual diagnostics, and patients receive protection from medical errors. This is a classic example of how technology enhances efficiency without replacing the human factor, but rather amplifying it. I believe that in the coming years, we will see the expansion of such solutions into other regions and segments of medicine.
