Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk has made a resonant statement that changes the perception of the future of the digital ecosystem. In his view, traffic generated by artificial intelligence-based agents will, in the very near future, far exceed the activity of live users. This is not just a forecast, but a recognition of an inevitable scenario for the network's development.
Forecasts Coming True Faster Than Expected
Musk supported the assessment of Cloudflare's Chief Financial Officer Thomas Seifert, who recently predicted that non-human traffic would become dominant by 2027. However, reality has proven swifter: already in May 2026, the share of machine requests exceeded user activity. Seifert emphasizes that if current growth rates are maintained, in five years the volume of non-human traffic could be 1,000 times higher than human activity. People risk becoming a "rounding error in internet statistics."
Impact on Economy and Commerce
This transformation will affect not only web infrastructure, but also e-commerce. ARK Invest analysts forecast that by 2030, AI agents will account for about 25% of all digital spending, whereas in 2025 this figure was only 2%. According to the company's estimates, by the end of the decade, agents could process transactions worth up to $8 trillion in online retail. This signifies a fundamental shift in how purchases are made and financial decisions are taken.
Independent Data Confirms the Trend
My own observations of the market align with these conclusions. According to HUMAN Security's 2026 report, automated traffic is growing eight times faster than user traffic. Over 2025, the monthly volume of traffic from AI agents increased by 187%, with more than 95% concentrated in three key sectors: retail, streaming and media, as well as travel and hospitality.
Imperva's research for 2025 showed that 53% of all web traffic already consists of automated requests. Fastly's data for January 2026 is even more telling: bots account for 49% of all requests, and services recognize 99% of them as unwanted. The numbers speak for themselves — we are witnessing not just an evolution, but a revolution in the structure of the internet.
As an analyst, I see in this trend both colossal opportunities for automation and efficiency, and serious challenges for cybersecurity and trust in the online environment. Investors and crypto market participants should closely monitor the development of AI agents: their integration into digital platforms could radically change monetization models and user experience in the coming years.
