Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk has made a resonant statement that changes the perception of the future of the digital space. In his view, human dominance on the internet is coming to an end: the volume of traffic generated by autonomous AI agents will, in the near term, far exceed the activity of live users. This is not just a forecast, but a recognition of an inevitable scenario in technological development.
Musk publicly supported the analysis of Cloudflare's Chief Financial Officer Thomas Seifert, who presented truly shocking figures. According to Seifert's estimates, if current growth rates persist, within five years the share of non-human traffic could exceed user traffic by a thousand times. Humanity risks becoming a "statistical margin of error" of the global network—so insignificant will our role become in the overall data flow.
Reality has outpaced forecasts
Notably, even the boldest expectations of analysts are failing to keep up with reality. Previously, Cloudflare assumed that machine traffic would overtake human traffic only by 2027. However, the historic turning point occurred much earlier—already in May 2026. This indicates the explosive nature of AI technology adoption and its rapid integration into everyday digital processes.
The trend extends far beyond simple web surfing. According to forecasts from the analytical firm ARK, by 2030 AI agents will account for nearly 25% of all digital spending, whereas in 2025 this figure was only about 2%. This involves astronomical sums: by the end of the decade, autonomous algorithms could process up to $8 trillion in online commerce. This will fundamentally change the internet economy.
Independent data confirms the trend
My own market research confirms this dynamic. The HUMAN Security report for 2026 shows that automated traffic is growing eight times faster than user traffic. From January to December 2025, the monthly volume of traffic from AI agents increased by 187%, with more than 95% of this flow coming from three key sectors: retail and e-commerce, streaming and media, as well as tourism and hospitality.
Additional data from Imperva shows that in 2025, 53% of all web traffic already consisted of automated requests. Fastly records a similar picture: bots accounted for 49% of all requests in January 2026, and 99% of them were deemed undesirable. The numbers speak for themselves—we are witnessing a fundamental transformation of the internet's architecture.
