Strategic maneuver: Strategy sold 1,690 BTC to buy back STRC and build up reserves

Strategy 2025

Between August 3 and 9, Strategy, one of the largest institutional holders of bitcoin, took an unusual step for itself: it sold off part of its digital gold. This involved the sale of 1,690 BTC, with all proceeds directed toward buying back its own preferred shares of STRC. In my view, this decision demonstrates a flexibility in capital management that is rarely seen among public companies focused on the long-term accumulation of the first cryptocurrency.

According to the quarterly report filed with the SEC, revenue from the bitcoin sale totaled $108.6 million at an average selling price of $64,262 per coin. It is important to emphasize that this transaction was not loss-making: the average cost basis of the company's entire portfolio is significantly lower, confirming its resilient position even amid market volatility.

In parallel, Strategy conducted an additional issuance of MSTR shares, placing 6.59 million new shares for $653.1 million. Of these funds, $650 million were allocated to increasing its dollar reserve, which now stands at an impressive $4.65 billion. This move looks like preparation for new large-scale purchases, although the company has not yet disclosed specific plans for further replenishing its bitcoin holdings.

As of August 9, the total volume of BTC on Strategy's balance sheet reached 840,447 coins, acquired for a total of $63.36 billion. This makes the company the undisputed leader among corporate cryptocurrency holders, far ahead of its closest competitors.

My analysis: The sale of 1,690 BTC to buy back STRC is not a signal of a strategic pivot, but rather a targeted optimization of the capital structure. Buying back preferred shares is often used to increase earnings per share and improve balance sheet metrics, which positively impacts the confidence of institutional investors. The fact that the company continues to hold more than 800,000 BTC indicates that its long-term bullish outlook on bitcoin remains unchanged. In the coming weeks, we should expect either a new round of purchases or an announcement of additional financial instruments, as the accumulated dollar reserve clearly exceeds current operational needs.
