Elon Musk: AI agents will take over internet traffic, and it's only a matter of time
Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has made a resonant statement: in the coming years, the volume of traffic generated by artificial intelligence-based agents will far exceed the activity of live network users. The entrepreneur called this scenario not just likely, but inevitable, effectively supporting the forecasts of Cloudflare's CFO.
At the center of the discussion were the assessments of Thomas Seifert from Cloudflare. He suggests that within five years, non-human traffic could exceed user traffic by 1,000 times. In his apt phrase, people risk becoming a "rounding error" in internet statistics. Notably, Cloudflare initially expected machine traffic to dominate only by 2027, but reality proved swifter: the tipping point arrived as early as May 2026.
The scale of change is confirmed by independent research. According to HUMAN Security's 2026 report, automated traffic is growing eight times faster than real user activity. From January to December 2025, the monthly volume of traffic from AI agents grew by 187%, with more than 95% concentrated in three key sectors: retail and e-commerce, streaming and media, and tourism and hospitality.
Data from other analytics firms only reinforces the picture. Specialists at Imperva, in their 2026 Bad Bot Report, calculated that in 2025, 53% of all web traffic came from automated requests. Fastly, in turn, recorded that bots accounted for 49% of all requests in January 2026, with 99% of them deemed unwanted.
Impact on the economy and commerce
The transformation will affect not only technical infrastructure but also financial flows. Analysts at ARK Invest forecast that by 2030, AI agents will account for nearly 25% of digital spending, up from about 2% in 2025. By their estimates, by the end of the decade, agents will process sums of up to $8 trillion in online commerce. This is not just a trend, but a fundamental shift in how the digital economy is structured.
Expert commentary: We are witnessing not an evolution, but a true revolution in the structure of the internet. For the crypto industry, this is a dual signal: on one hand, there is growing demand for "humanity" verification and bot protection, which opens new niches for projects with identity proof technologies. On the other, AI agents are becoming a new class of consumers that will require native payment solutions, and here decentralized finance could play a key role. The market stands on the threshold of an era where machines will become the main clients, and investors should closely watch projects capable of serving this new demand.
