Elon Musk: AI agents will turn people into "rounding error" of internet traffic

Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk has made a resonant statement that changes the perception of the future of the digital economy. In his view, the volume of traffic generated by artificial intelligence (AI) agents will, in the coming years, far exceed the activity of live users. This is not just a hypothesis, but an inevitable scenario for the network's development.

Musk publicly supported the forecast by Cloudflare's Chief Financial Officer, Thomas Seifert, who had previously voiced shocking figures. According to his estimates, within just five years, non-human traffic could exceed user traffic by a thousandfold. Seifert emphasized that people risk becoming a "rounding error in internet statistics," so significant will the dominance of machines become.

It is important to note that this trend is no longer theoretical, but quite tangible. Cloudflare had previously predicted that machine traffic would overtake human traffic only by 2027. However, reality proved to be more rapid: this milestone was already surpassed in May 2026. The momentum is impressive, and it directly impacts adjacent markets, including the cryptocurrency sector, where automation and micropayments will become the foundation of interaction.

Impact on Digital Commerce

The scale of change will affect not only web surfing, but also global e-commerce. Analysts at ARK Invest estimate that by 2030, AI agents will account for nearly 25% of all digital spending, whereas in 2025 this figure was only about 2%. This involves a colossal amount—around $8 trillion in the online retail sector by the end of the decade. This creates a fundamental shift in how companies will build their business models and interact with consumers.

Independent studies confirm this trend. The HUMAN Security report for 2026 records automated traffic growing eight times faster than user traffic. At the same time, 95% of all AI traffic is concentrated in three sectors: retail, streaming and media, as well as travel and hospitality. Data from Imperva shows that in 2025, 53% of web traffic came from bots, while Fastly estimates the share of non-human requests at 49% in January 2026.

My take: For the crypto industry, this is a signal to accelerate infrastructure solutions. Smart contracts and micropayments will become the ideal mechanism for settlements between AI agents, but without proper identity verification and protection against abuse, we risk facing a new wave of fraud. Investors should take a closer look at projects that solve the problem of authenticating machine traffic—this will be one of the hottest areas in the coming years.
