Elon Musk confirms: AI agents will become the dominant force on the internet
Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk has made a resonant statement that changes the perception of the future of the digital space. In his view, traffic generated by artificial intelligence-based agents will, in the coming years, far exceed the activity of real users. This is not just a hypothesis, but an inevitable scenario for the network's development that we are already witnessing today.
Musk publicly endorsed the forecast by Cloudflare's Chief Financial Officer, Thomas Seifert, who previously presented bold calculations. According to his estimates, within just five years, the volume of non-human traffic could exceed user traffic by a thousandfold. This statement came against the backdrop of Cloudflare's second-quarter report, where Seifert emphasized that people are gradually becoming a "statistical margin of error" in overall internet activity metrics.
A trend that has already become reality
Notably, Cloudflare initially expected that machine traffic would only surpass user traffic by 2027. However, reality exceeded expectations: this milestone was already crossed in May 2026. Such acceleration indicates that the adoption of AI agents is happening much faster than even the most optimistic analysts had assumed.
The trend is also confirmed by independent research. HUMAN Security's 2026 report shows that automated traffic is growing eight times faster than user traffic. Between January and December 2025, the monthly volume of traffic from AI agents increased by 187%. Moreover, more than 95% of this traffic comes from three key sectors: retail and e-commerce, streaming and media, as well as travel and hospitality.
Data from Imperva in the Bad Bot Report 2026 shows that in 2025, 53% of all web traffic consisted of automated requests. Fastly, in turn, notes that bots accounted for 49% of all requests in January 2026, with 99% of them deemed unwanted.
Impact on the digital economy
The growth of AI agents will affect not only web traffic but also e-commerce. According to forecasts by the analytical firm ARK, by 2030 AI agents could account for nearly 25% of digital spending, whereas in 2025 this figure was only about 2%. Experts estimate that by the end of the decade, agents will handle amounts of $8 trillion in the online commerce sector.
This is a fundamental shift in how the internet economy is structured. We are moving from a model where humans are the end consumers to a model where algorithms make purchasing decisions, interact with services, and shape demand. For businesses, this means the need to adapt to new realities where the client may not be a human, but an AI system.
From my point of view, this trend carries both colossal opportunities and serious challenges. On the one hand, automation promises increased efficiency and reduced costs. On the other hand, we face security, verification, and ethical issues that require immediate solutions. The industry stands on the threshold of a new era, and those who fail to adapt in time risk being left behind by the digital revolution.
