Elon Musk: AI agent traffic will soon far surpass human activity online
Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk has publicly supported the ambitious forecast of Cloudflare CFO Thomas Seifert, stating that the dominance of non-human traffic on the internet is not a matter of probability but an inevitable scenario. According to him, the activity of autonomous AI agents in the coming years will far exceed that of real users.
Forecast: humans will become a "rounding error" in statistics
Seifert, speaking during Cloudflare's quarterly report, suggested that if current growth rates persist, within five years the volume of non-human traffic could exceed user traffic by 1,000 times. He emphasized that human activity will become a "rounding error" in global internet statistics. Musk, commenting on this assessment, called such a course of events inevitable.
Notably, Cloudflare had previously forecast that machine traffic would surpass user traffic only by 2027. However, reality proved more dynamic: this milestone was already reached in May 2026. This indicates that the adoption of AI tools and automated services is happening significantly faster than even the most optimistic models predicted.
Impact on commerce and the digital economy
The growth of AI agents will affect not only web traffic but also e-commerce. According to ARK Invest analytics, by 2030 autonomous agents could account for nearly 25% of all digital spending, whereas in 2025 this figure was only about 2%. Fund experts estimate that by the end of the decade, agents will process transactions worth up to $8 trillion in the online retail sector.
Independent data confirms the trend
My own observations of the market confirm that this trend is no longer a hypothesis but a reality. According to the HUMAN Security report for 2026, automated traffic is growing eight times faster than user traffic. From January to December 2025, the monthly volume of traffic from AI agents increased by 187%, with more than 95% of this volume coming from three key sectors: retail and e-commerce, streaming and media, as well as tourism and hospitality.
The Imperva study (Bad Bot Report 2026) showed that in 2025, 53% of all web traffic came from automated requests. Fastly analysts, in turn, recorded that in January 2026, bots accounted for 49% of all requests, with 99% of them deemed unwanted.
For the crypto industry, this is a double-edged signal: on the one hand, AI agents open new horizons for automated payments and DeFi interactions; on the other, they create serious risks for security and verification. Investors should closely monitor projects that can offer reliable solutions for bot identification and filtering, as they will become key players in the new digital reality.
